PUNJABI LOBIA MASALA RECIPE | JAYASHREE RECIPES 

Punjabi lobia curry is a North Indian style black eyed beans where lobia is cooked in a spicy onion tomato gravy. Black eyed beans also known as lobia, chawli, cow peas, Karamani, raungi in different parts of India. These are incredibly nutrient-dense, packed with plenty of fiber and protein into each serving. It goes well with  rice, chapathi, roti and dosa. RECIPE FOR PUNJABI LOBIA MASALA

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup black eyed beans (lobia)
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 3 cloves
  • 2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 1 cardamom pod
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/8 tsp hing/asafoetida
  • 1 large onion - finely chopped
  • 2 green chilli
  • 1 large ripe tomato - pureed
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1.5 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1.5 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala powder / kitchen king masala powder
  • salt to taste
  • 2.5 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp kasoori methi

METHOD

  • soak black eyed beans in enough water for 8-10 hours
  • heat oil in a pressure cooker
  • when the oil is hot, temper with cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon stick, cardamom pod, bay leaf and hing
  • saute for few seconds
  • add finely chopped onion and saute well until transparent
  • add ginger garlic paste and green chilli
  • saute well until the raw smell goes
  • add tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder and salt
  • mix well and cook until the oil separates from the masala
  • add soaked black eyed beans and mix well
  • cover and cook in low medium flame for 5-7 minutes
  • now oil starts to separate from the masala
  • add water and mix well
  • pressure cook for 5 whistle or until it is cooked completely
  • once the pressure releases naturally, open the cooker, add lemon juice and kasoori methi
  • mix well
  • garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapathi
  • delicious 😋 
NOTES
  • adjust spice level according to your taste
  • do not overcook the black eyed beans otherwise they will turn mushy
  • you can also add coconut milk to make rich curry
